Poker Position Explained: Why Position Matters

Position is one of the most important — and most underrated — skills in poker. Where you sit relative to the dealer decides how much information you have when you act, and that information is a real edge. This guide explains the positions at a poker table, why late position is so powerful, and how to adjust your play. For the wider game, see our Lotus365 poker guide and how to play poker.

What is “position” in poker?

Position refers to when you act in a betting round relative to your opponents. Acting last is a big advantage because you’ve already seen what everyone else did before it’s your turn — you have more information to make a better decision. Acting first means you’re guessing, because players behind you can still raise. The dealer button marks the latest position and rotates each hand, so position is shared fairly over time.

Why late position wins

From late position you can: see how many opponents entered the pot and how strong they look, steal pots when everyone shows weakness, control the size of the pot, and bluff more credibly because your bets carry the threat of the information you hold. Studies of winning players consistently show most profit comes from the button and cut-off — the late seats.

Adjust your starting hands by position

A hand that’s a fold in early position can be a raise on the button. As a simple guide:

  • Early position: play only strong hands — big pairs and strong aces.
  • Middle position: add good pairs and strong suited cards.
  • Late position: widen further — suited connectors, more broadways, smaller pairs.
  • Blinds: be cautious; you’ll be out of position after the flop.

In position vs out of position

“In position” means you act after your opponent on every street — keep this advantage by playing more hands when you’ll have it, and fewer when you won’t. Being “out of position” (acting first) is hard work; tighten up, and avoid bloating the pot with marginal hands when you’ll be guessing all the way.

Common position mistakes

  • Playing too many hands from early position or the blinds.
  • Ignoring position and valuing hands the same from every seat.
  • Failing to use the button to steal and control pot size.
  • Calling out of position with weak, hard-to-play hands.
